Our NET (Native English Teacher)

  • Grant Moule

Hello everyone. My name is Grant Moule, and I am Sacred Heart’s Native English Teacher. I would like to take this chance to introduce myself and our school’s Reading Workshop Programmes.

I come from London, England. I gained my PGDE from the University of Hong Kong, my Master’s Degree from Bristol University, and have been teaching in Hong Kong Primary Schools for more than 15 years. I love working in Cheung Chau Sacred Heart, and feel blessed to have so many amazing pupils and wonderful colleagues.

The aim of our school’s Reading Workshop is to complement and expand what is taught in the General English lessons; to add skills to knowledge, fluency to accuracy, and engagement to application.

The Key Stage One Reading Workshop consists of three key programmes – Shared Reading, Phonics and Guided Reading. In our Shared Reading lessons, we introduce literacy skills through a mix of Education Bureau and Authentic Texts. In our Phonics classes, we help our pupils break down words into meaningful chunks, and then rebuild them with greater understanding. In Guided Reading, we steer them on the final steps towards independent reading.

In Key Stage Two we also have three main programmes. The Shared Reading programme is continued with a similar mix of Education Bureau texts and Storybooks. We also continue teaching Phonics, but now through specially designed readers rather than introducing individual sounds. Speaking Practice, our third key programme, helps our pupils build both confidence and ability in their presentation skills.

Learning should be meaningful. Learning should be engaging. Learning should be authentic. In both our Reading Workshop and General English programmes, we design and teach activities and projects that hold these values at their core.
